A trip to Kvikkjokk

What to do in Jokkmokk

The doors to the west - Uvssat davás, about 3 km

From Jokkmokk it is approximately 130 km to Kvikkjokk. A trip to a real corner, you might think. But there is so much to see along the road which in itself makes it worth a trip!

The doors to the west - Uvssat davás, about 3 km

Akkats kraftstation outside Jokkmokk can be said to be the gateway to the mountains. Here have the artists from Jokkmokk, Lars Pirak and Bengt Lindstrom painted and decorated both the gates of the power station and the house next door. On one of the gates you can see the eye of Nåjden looking out over Sápmi, Sami country. On the other house next to the gates, Lars Pirak have painted a work of rein deers. Whether you are going to the north or south there is a car park with information about the artworks.

Kvarnen (The Mill)

If you follow the sign 2 km to the right in the woods and then go a few hundred meters down, you will be taken to the old mill.

Björkholmen is located on the other side of the river, but they had their mill on this side. The mill is restored and there are several small houses. You can see how they grained their flour in old times.

In the village Tjåmotis at the Blackälvens beach we have 7 Lapp stalls right next to the road. Log-building are well preserved and represents a piece of ancient lineage Sami culture and is the only of its kind left in Norrbotten. Once there where 13 stalls, the 7 that remains today is believed to be from the first half of the 1800s.

Houses have been on the same spot since the 1600s and served as storage stalls. Tjåmotis is situaded along the Sami trail and stalls were in use at the Autumn and Spring moving to keep the equipment that was not needed in the mountains and in the forrest. Houses belong to Jåkkåkaska Sami village and has been in use until the 1950s

Brudslöjan - about 105 km

At Köpenhamn you can find a sign wich point up to Brudslöjan, a high waterfall. The path winds up, about 2 km before you arrive to the waterfall. Here is a view of the lake Saggat. Down the road there are a few tables if you want to have a picnic.

Others along the way

The road is also famous for its rich wildlife. In the winter, the famous large elks from Sarek comes down to find better grazing and then they occur in large flocks along the way. The summer of 2003 was also a bear rich summer, and many were the tourists on the bus to Kvikkjokk who saw a bear through the bus windows. Personally, I had the fortune of late one night on the road to Jokkmokk see a she-bear with 3 kids ... ... ... ... ... .. what do you say?
