Kvikkjokk Church

In Kvikkjokk Mountains there are several churches in lapp cots and chapels. In Kvikkjokk there have been churches since the 1600s.

First on a small island in Kamajåkk. A timber cottage with painted walls, which was also called the church hall. Remaining from that time is a bell cast in 1665.

At that time the preacher was living on the other side of Kamajåkk, the so-called Priest side. There was also Kvikkjokks first, very simple cemetery.

In the late 1600s Kvikkjokk became an important place in the area and the capital of religious respect. A second church was built pre-1763 where the present church stands. A red timber building with extensions for the sacristy and gun house. The church was renovated in 1823 and was pulled down in the early 1900s.

The current church in Kvikkjokk was built during the years 1906-1907 and was inaugurated on July 7, 1907. Beside the church is the cemetery still in use. The church has services at Easter, midsummer and Christmas. Here is celebrated baptisms, and they have both weddings and funerals. The church is usually open during summertime and otherwise you can borrow the key to visit the church your self.


Parkajaure, about 25 km southwest of Kvikkjokk, is theTuorpons Sami village autumn residents. And this Assembly has a tent church used in the church weekend celebration on the spot. Held around Aug. 10.

In Alkavare in Sarek is a small chapel, which was completed 1787. It is built of solid stone with a timber roof. The chapel matured in 1900's first section, but was restored and re-opened in 1961. Next to the chapel are visible traces of mining work taking place in the 1600s. This was the birth of Kvikkjokk village. Here is celebrated each year the church weekend around July 25.

In Staloluokta there is a church cot inaugurated in 1971. Staloluokta is in Padjelanta National Park and is thr Tuorpon Sami village summer residents. Here is celebrated church weekend in early July and early August.

In Arasluokta in Padjelanta National Park the first church hut was built in 1944. There is a wooden chapel in the middle of the village. Here is celebrated church weekend around July 14. Arasluokta is Jåkkåkaska sami village summer residents.

In Vaisaluokta at Akkajaure the first church cot was built in 1947. The current church cot was inaugurated in 1984. Here they have church weekends around 20 July and in early August.
